All this class were named after sea birds. Only three remain to this day and two have passed through the same yard where TERN was totally re-built, ?The Ocean Yacht Company?, at no expense spared. Tern brought to the yard in 1994, originally to have her counter repaired ? returned in 1996 for total restoration back to original design work and was completed to be ICYA competitive for 2000. Tern consumed 4 trees of Larch, together with hand chosen Afromosia White Oak and Teak. Tern raced in Belfast Lough until 1912 when it is believed she converted to yawl for cruising. TERN Arrived in Cornish waters about 1947 and was used for day trips. The former owner bought her in 1964 and much restoration work was done, she was owned by George Ellison and maintained by Falmouth Boat Construction of Flushing. She must be one of the few old gaffers that was actually built for racing, is still gaff rigged and still racing. The present owner, who bought her in 2000, has sailed her extensively around Falmouth and Fowey, joining in many regattas as well as the Fife regatta on the Clyde 2003 before sailing back to Falmouth. Since 2006, she has been based in Port Andratx, Mallorca, racing in the Trofeo Almirante conde de Barcelona. GENERAL Tern was totally re-built between 1995 & 2000. Long keel of cast iron with deep narrow sections and an elegant counter stern. Construction is carvel, larch, on copper riveted white oak frames of about 2? x 1,5? nomila section. There are additionally steel floors, knees, and a number of later additions to steelwork to strengthen and stiffen the structure. Deck & upper works have been totally rebuilt, using afromosia for cock-pit and coach roof. New marine-ply for the deck. Please see Ocean Yacht Company?s website for details of the re-build.
