Alden Triangle 1929 Boats Review and Specs
Year: 1929Manufacturer: David Jones Yacht Brokerage
Price: US$27,500
This early Alden Triangle is ready to sail. She was meticulously maintained by her prior owner and received a cosmetic refurbishment by her current owner this year. Her sails are in good useable condition as are her spars and standing rigging. Her hull appears to be sound throughout. Her structure is appears to be sound with no “hogging” or loss of sheer as is common with these boats. This Triangle has a traditional canvas covered deck (which appears to have recently been redone), a varnished mahogany-trimmed cockpit and a well for a small outboard on her aft port side (the well is quite convenient, but could be easily closed if an outboard is not desired). She appears to have all of her original bronze hardware. In this condition, she is quite a rare find. She should be seen to be appreciated. She was in the water and sailing this summer (until Irene she was pulled before hurricane Irene). Alden Triangle Class: The Triangle class was Marblehead’s answer to the Long Island Sound Interclub, which appeared in New York waters the same year the Triangle was unveiled. A group of Marblehead yachtsmen representing the Boston, Eastern, and Corinthian Yachts Clubs (the points of the Triangle) sought a boat they could race locally, as well as farther away; they requested from John Alden’s design office a class of boat that would be evenly matched with the other similar one-designs, but would also be distinctive in its own right. The result was Alden design no. 278, the “Triangle”. In 1926 the first eight Triangles were launched by the James E. Graves yard in Marblehead. Five races followed in 1927; after a yard fire destroyed the molds that summer, production moved to Rhode Island. The last Triangle was built in 1938. Of the approximately 60 built, no more than 15 are thought to still exist. Specifications: LOA: 28′ 6″ LWL: 18′ 5″ Draft: 4′ 9″ Beam: 7′ 6″ Builder: James E.
