RNLI Liverpool Class Boats Review and Specs

Year: 1949
Manufacturer: Wooden Ships
Price: £28,000
(US$43,456)

Length 35? Beam 10?6? Draft 2?6? Weight 8 tons 15cwt Built by Groves and Gutteridge, Cowes in 1949 at a cost of £10,964. She served as the Clovelly Life Boat from 1959 ? 1967. Sold out of service, she found her way to Yorkshire before returning to Cornwall in 2005. Restored and refitted, she now runs trips round the bay. She is Coded Cat 4, 20 miles from Safe Haven, Daylight Hours, 12 passengers. Annual self-declared until 2011 Built in 2 layers of best mahogany laid diagonally with calico and white lead between with copper rivets at 4? centres along every plank seam. This method of build gives an immensely strong yet slightly flexible hull. Underwater, she has along external iron ballast keel + hand rails round the bilges to grab hold of when she is upside down. She is designed as a self-righting life-boat with the raised, sealed bouyancy compartments at either end. The deck is built in the same way as the hull but with opening panels, screwed and sealed down. The openings gave access in the service intervals to the sealed buoyancy compartments either side of the engines. Originally these compartments and the forward and after bouyancy compartments were filled with very carefully made, sealed mahogany boxes which gave buoyancy even though the hull skin should be breached. The area under the deck forward of the house contains the fuel tanks. The deck is sealed with non-slip grey deck paint. Slatted mahogany seating either side forward sheltered by the forward buoyancy compartment and either side of the helm aft are modern additions. The engines are in the midships area with a sealed water tight bulkhead forward and aft of the engine room. A beautifully built, rounded ?house? over the engine room midships, also in the same mahogany construction as the hull, also adds to her self-righting ability. The house roof overhangs aft to give a sheltered position for the crew and a sheltered, water-tight doorway into the engine room. This doorway bulkhead is built in riveted aluminium. Bronze framed, 3-section, fold-down windscreen. Engine control instruments on either side of the doorway. Being a slipway life-boat, that is to say kept ashore in the Life Boat House and launched down a slipway with the crew on board and engines running when she hit the water, she has a lifting rudder which slides up and down a vertical rectangular section rudder stock carried on the stern post. (Through lack of use, the rudder blade no longer slides up the stock) Steering is by bronze worm gear to a wheel in the lee of the deck house. This gear has a wonderfully smooth action and spins like a top. Emergency tiller stowed in it?s chocks, drops onto the stock head when required. Bulwarks all round, about 24? high with steel stanchion posts and guard wires above. Bronze flap scuppers at regular intervals all round the deck edge. All original bronze deck fittings still in place. Massive oak, bronze trimmed sampson posts in all 4 corners of the cock-pit. Low level doorway and step down into the fore peak, now used for stowage and a toilet. Mast in a tabernacle lowers down aft to rest in a bronze crutch on the house. Twin Betamarine 35hp 4-cyl naturally aspirated fresh water cooled diesel engines, installed new in 2008. July 2008 340 hours. New s/s shafts, bronze props and seals. Oil drip trays under each engine. Single lever controls. Max. 8.5knts. 4 lph per engine @ 7.5knts 2 x 150 amp/hr 12v batteries in sealed boxes ahead of each engine. New engine wiring. The props work in tunnels which totally protect them from fouling and allow her to work in very shallow water. 2 x 80 gall bronze fuel tanks under the cock-pit sole ahead of the engines. Compass in brass binnacle in front of the wheel. Cobra DSC VHF radio Garmin 120XL GPS 12 adult li
