The Sterling sloop was designed by Kim Holman and sometimes regarded as the cruising version of his more famous race winner, the Twister. The Sterling is a little fuller bodied with a larger cock-pit and a fraction more beam, all of which makes her a very comfortable, wholesome and capable small cruising yacht. Length on deck 28?9? Lwl 22?6? Beam 8?7? Draft 4?8? Displ: 4.98 tons Thames tonnage 7TM The yacht was built by Kim Holman?s brother Jack at his Upham?s Yard, Brixham Devon in 1963. Jack Holman built 19 Sterlings, a big production of a single design in those days proving the success of the design. Planked in pitch-pine below the wl with Lagos mahogany above the wl, all copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers. The planking is full length. The splined topsides give a perfect finish. White enamel topsides with scarlet caveat line and boot top line. Heavy beam shelf and stringer, timber hanging and lodging knees. The two structural midships ply bulkheads provide mast support and stiffness to the hull. Oak and iroko back-bone. Oak floors with a few galvanised strap floors midships in way of the water tank. Iron ballast keel, bolts last drawn 1996. Straight laid teak deck on a ply sub deck. Varnished teak king plank, cover-boards and toe-rails. Oak Sampson post on the uncluttered fore deck. Chrome and teak bar cleat takes mooring lines. Stainless steel stemhead fitting with single chain roller to stbd. Stainless steel pulpit, push-pit and stanchions with twin guard wires and dodgers. Varnished teak coach-roof coamings, extended aft to form the cock-pit coamings and canted outwards to give good back support, with wide tapered teak capping to carry the sheet winches. Oval windows in the coamings reglazed in 10mm poly-carbonate in 1996. Coach-roof deck in sheathed marine ply with nicely rolled round top edge and varnished teak grab rails each side. Twin chromed vents on varnished teak Dorades on the coach-roof. Bronze mushroom vent on aft deck. Glazed, varnished teak fore hatch on the fore end of the coach-roof. Self-draining cock-pit with full length seat lockers each side in scrubbed teak with varnished teak margins. Twin varnished teak doors with 6? sill below and fold-up 6? flap to bring the well up to seat level in poor weather. Sliding hatch in a garage to the cabin entrance. Excellent wrap-round spray-hood with window on stainless steel hoops. Teak gratings. Lazarette stowage. Masthead Bermudian sloop rig on Sparlight aluminium mast, stepped in a galvanised steel shoe which spans 3 deck beams on the coach-roof with twin structural bulkheads and doorway compression posts to take the rig strains. Single spreaders. Stainless steel standing rigging replaced in 1997 with twin standing back-stays to the quarters, twin lowers and cap shrouds and fore stay on Furlex roller furling gear. Lazy inner fore stay stemhead to spreaders. Stainless steel chain plates. Tapered varnished spruce boom with chromed bronze roller reefing gear on the goose neck. Kicker on tackle. Main sheet with jammer on the lower block to a car on a horse on the aft deck across the tiller. Pair of top action primary sheet winches + pair of bottom action secondary winches all on the cock-pit coamings. Pair of chromed top action halyard winches on the mast. Mainsail. Genoa on Furlex, new in 2004 Cruising chute Mainsail cover Spray-hood and cock-pit cover. Betamarine 13.5hp 2-cylinder fresh water cooled diesel engine installed new in 2004 with new shaft and prop. Flexibly mounted. Approx 700 hrs, (autumn 10) 2 x 12v batteries on 12v circuits with change-over switch. 4 berths V-berths in fore cabin. Bulkhead to chain locker forward. Varnished locker doors to stowage below the berth
