Real. Authentic. American. Look around for a lobster boat, and sooner or later you will here “if you want a real lobster boat, you go to Beals Island”. The term “lobster boat” has lost a bit of meaning over the last decade or so, with so many boats described as being one. Seems that plenty of mass producers think that if they paint a hull blue, they can call it a lobster boat–don’t be fooled as it takes a whole lot more than blue paint and slick ads to make a lobster boat. It takes generations of learning and working in the boats and in the sea. It is with great pride that this real lobster boat from Beals Island, designed and built by a legendary builder to those who know these boats; Richard Alley. A lobster boat’s appeal and beauty are borne from lines developed over the generations following the functions, conditions, and demands where these vessels are called to duty. These boats are built and designed to work in all variations of shallow and turbulent seas, working in and around rocky outcroppings near the surf, against stiff currents and swells, in all weather conditions. These vessels take the requirements for reliability and maneuverability to a whole new level. They are designed and built to keep those aboard safe, dry, productive…..and alive. The pilots of these vessels not only have to work in and around these demanding areas under the most adverse conditions, they have to be able to pilot the vessel, and keep their minds on their work as well. Built of heavy white cedar planking (for light weight, strength and rot resistance) over oak frames, ribs and stringers for structural integrity; and fitted with a big new 300 horsepower John Deere, with enough power to climb a steep swell like a cat up a tree. Two helm stations allow the lobstermen and women to get out to the traps inside and work the grounds at the outside helm. Economy is married to brute force with the brand new John Deere 300hp turbo diesel power plant. There is plenty of reserve power to fishtail out of tight spot, muscle against a stiff current and get where you need to be; and then you can ease the throttle back off of the boost and enjoy a brisk cruise home, burning only 6 gallons of diesel per hour. Her lines are no less than stunning, but their traditional beauty is truly a product of the form following function equation. You can trim this boat out for pleasure, or put her to work today. She is offered at the price of her repower alone, but there is so much more that has been done. New glassed over decks, deck beams, house, Pacific Seaglaze safety glass in extruded aluminum frames, commercial grade FURUNO electronics, tanks, RACORS, plumbing, all new electrical, flowing from new panels. Those that have owned a few classic vessels and workboats know that the boat to buy is the one that the last guy spent all the money re-doing. This is that boat. Sound hull, heavy trap and anchor guards, new beams and decks, and her new John Deere, all add up to a rare offering at an unheard of price. She has one berth, which is a pilot berth in the wheelhouse and that’s it. No galley, no head……she is a blank canvas if her next owner wants to set her up for recreational
