SY ORION, Laying Gibraltar. This well founded yacht has been owned by Dr. Graham Hutt for the past two years. Graham is a sailor with over 40 years experience at sea and writes the Imray nautical pilots covering ?North Africa? and the ?Islas Baleares.? The yacht has covered over 4,000 miles in the past season working hard in all weathers while working to update the two books. ORION is one of a pair of very special yachts, designed by AN Michel who is famous in France and president of the French Yacht Design Academy. As far as can be ascertained, he built two of these yachts: one for himself and another for his son. Launched in 1990, ORION sailed around the world and was then used for sail training and made several transatlantic crossings before being purchased by the present owner. The engine ? a Volvo Penta MD11 has been completely rebuilt and gives excellent and quiet service. At 1300 RPM and doing 5 knots, she uses a meagre 1.1 Litres per hour! The genoa is new and the fully battened mainsail are in excellent shape. An inner forestay is tucked away but ready for use in cutter rig configuration along with a virtually unused staysail and spinnaker. New mainsail cover with lazyjacks, the bimini. Spray hood and various covers along with the cockpit cushions are all new within the last year or two. Since the yacht has been used extensively for updating pilots throughout all seasons, she has a good set of navigation gear including stand-alone chart plotter and, in addition, several chart programmes loaded onto a laptop which will go with the yacht. The interior is in excellent condition and all trimmings are of solid bright varnished mahogany. With two hatches and several quarter-lights in the saloon, she is bright inside. Accommodation for 7 is available in 3 double cabins and a lounge berth. However, she sails easily if short handed and the present owner does a lot of single handed sailing throughout the year. Portable heaters and an air conditioner are available options. ORION had a full survey carried out in 2006. No osmosis or any other major defects were found. Several minor recommendations were made, all of which were carried out. She was again lifted in July 2008 for anti fouling and returned to the water with minor work ? mostly cleaning, priming and anti-fouling – being carried out. A brief survey was again done to ensure there was no osmosis. Keel bolts were again checked and all was found to be in excellent order. Reason for sale? I need a larger yacht with more headroom. Although beamy and spacious, ORION has a 6 foot headroom: and I am 6.1?! PS. UPDATE: Orion was again lifted for cleaning in January 2009 following the oil spill in Gibraltar bay. A Lloyds surveyor (Neil Wilkinson) was again asked to check the hull under the waterline while out, and all was well.
