A very limited number of the real Kelly Peterson 46 sailboats were built in the Queen Long Yard. Although Peterson Yachts are still in production “Esprit” is hull #30, the very last one of this model to be built. The current & 2nd.owners have sailed her over 26,000 Blue Water miles.  The 1st owner raced her in such prestige races as the “Transpac Race” and “New Port to Ensenada Race”.  Esprit is truly a classic Blue Water sailing vessel, which has been extensively refitted and upgraded. Between the years 2007 & 2008 she underwent an extensive major refit in New Zealand, in total over US$ 100,000 were spent. The works included; replacement of the standing rigging, repainting of the mast and boom, the bottom redone with a “Copper shield epoxy” coat; complete engine rebuild, new dripless & cutless bearings, reset ports and hatches, complete new cushions & upholstery new bimini & dodger with complete cockpit enclosure added, so that she can be sailed in gale force weather in dry warm comfort.  A pioneer in performance cruising design, this model was drawn exclusively for Jack Kelly Yachts by Doug Peterson.  Doug Peterson is the world famous naval architect who designed the New Zealand America’s Cup boat “Black Magic” in 1995. The KELLY PETERSON 46 is a longer and upgraded version of the much loved Kelly Peterson 44, which in many of the world’s major cruising ports you will still see one of the 200 KP44’s originally built.  Formosa, the yard that built the 44s, then moved onto an extended version that reportedly cut out Doug Peterson and certainly Jack Kelly.  These are not genuine Kelly Peterson 46s and are priced much less because of the low build quality and inferior characteristics of materials used.  Kelly Peterson 46’s were designed to be tough enough to run onto a reef and “Esprit” has proven to be safe under all sailing conditions and has the perfect cruising layout.  The galley is setup for cooking underway and the dinette is practically arranged for cruising or living aboard. Sleeping berths accommodate 7, and there’s even a workshop with a workbench and a vise.  The owners have nothing but praise for the performance achieved by this strong, safe, fast but also very comfortable yacht.
