Dean Catamarans are constructed in South Africa to international standards. They are known for their unusual looks, spacious interiors, strength of build and seaworthy capability. The raked back mast allows the Dean 440 to point better than many catamarans, a characteristic that all boat owners look for!  “Jabulo” (which means ‘Happiness’ in Swahili) was one of the first Dean 440 “Espace” models built. She was cruised across the Atlantic and Caribbean by her first owners – a family with young children on a two year sabbatical. She was then sold to her current owner in Florida in 2005 and further cruising of the western Caribbean ensued, before returning to the USA and her home port in the Chesapeake Bay. “Jabulo” is fully equipped for bluewater cruising and can accommodate a large crew with her four double cabins.   I have personal experience of the Dean catamaran’s abilities, having endured a storm off the Cape of Storms (Cape of Good Hope) with sustained winds of 50 – 60 knots and 25 ft seas. The Dean 40 I was sailing lay comfortably to a sea anchor for many hours before we were able to continue.
