BROKERS COMMENTS Proving William Fife’s genius, FYNE, with an up-wind sail area of 135 square metres, a displacement of 8 tons and a 13 m deck length she was born to give outstanding performance. It is difficult to know what to admire more, the slender silhouette of this magnificent cutter or the excellence of her creation at the beginning of the 21st century – a Chantier Naval Stagnol creation strip plank / cold moulded construction allied to a pedigree design. HISTORY From 1889 three boats all based on drawing N° 216 of William Fife III, were built in the Fife yard at Fairlie. The first, NAN was completed in 1890 for TC Burrows of County Cavan in Ireland. Then MINERVA, N° 234 built in the same year, was for W. Coucharof. The third, VOLVA given the number 247 was built in 1891 for G.Watson. Proof of the success of this design is that all three boat hulls were exactly as the original drawing N° 216. A change to the rig of “VOLVA” gave her a reduced mainsail but much larger topsail, to the double advantage of combining a big and small topsail without spars. This is the version recreated with equal performance in FYNE. Apart from this distinction the successive boats were unmodified by Fife’s yard.
