The first recorded sighting of Catamarans was when Magellan’s ships first encountered the Chamorros of the Mariana Islands in 1521. Antonio Pigafetta (Magellan?s journalist) recorded that the Chamorros’ sailboats far surpassed Magellan’s in speed and maneuverability. The benefits of the Catamaran design manifests in increased stability, efficiency, and speed. Unfortunately Catamarans tend to be rude in appearance as the designers try to maximize all of these inherent benefits. The Cat Cay 53 design criteria were not to focus on pushing the envelope of maximizing every aspect of the Catamaran design. The focus rather was to take a traditional offshore hull design and improve its stability, efficiency, and speed. All of these objectives had to be achieved while maintaining the finished product as being pleasing to the eye. Comparing three 52-foot offshore designs, the Cat Cay 53 Enclosed Helm, the Cabo 52 Express, and the Viking 52S Open demonstrates the Cat Cay 53?s superiority. The 53 Cat Cay is the only 53 foot yacht cabable of 50 knots. The Cat Cay 53 has about 30% more internal volume or floor space. The Cat Cay 53 Enclosed Helm has a higher top speed of 16.37% over the Viking 52S Open and 17.27% over the Cabo 52 Express. The Cat Cay 53?s efficiency comes through by operating with substantially less horsepower. The Cat Cay 53 requires 25.37% less HP than the Viking 52S and 33.62% less than the Cabo 52. The Bottom Line benefit is of course Fuel Consumption ? this is where the Cat Cay 53 really shines. In WOT conditions the Cat Cay 53 uses 34.40% less fuel than the Viking 52S while at the same time going 6.4 knots faster. In the case of the Cabo 52 the Cat Cay 53 is 6.7 knots faster while consuming 47.79% less fuel. Under ideal cruise conditions the Cat Cay 53 remains the fastest by nearly 6 knots and continues its fuel efficiency by up to 37% The Cat Cay 53 is larger, more stable, faster, more luxurious, and substantially more fuel-efficient than the 53-foot competition and doing so for virtually the same capital outlay. The rest of the World has already accepted the Catamaran design and it is time for the USA to do the same.
