Neeltje (Pronounced Nail-Chay)WHAT IS IT???SHE IS A 1902 SAILING DUTCH CANAL BARGE“Tjalk”(Pronounced Chal-ick)She was originally designed as a working vessel to carry cargo through the canals and inland water ways of the Netherlands.WHAT ARE THOSE FLLIPPERS???They are Leeboards and are lifted up and down to stop lateral drift when sailing. The same as a centerboard or keel. Only one is dropped at a time. They are made out of Oak and weigh approximately 750 lbs. each.BRIEF HISTORYWhen and Where:She was built in 1902 by a family who built several to live aboard and work. She is made of riveted iron. Sometime after WWII she was converted to a pleasure craft Yacht.In the early Nineteen Eighties she was bought in Europe by Dan Rowan of “Laugh-In “ fame. He lived on her for several years in France. He then had “Neeltje” freight shipped to Baltimore in 1986.
