Built of Norwegian pine, this Galea was launched in 1910 by Lars OlaiSjö on the island of Halsnöy in Hardanger Fjord. During the first years of her life was used for fishing herring in the North Atlantic sailing between the coast of Norway, Scotland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland. During the Second World War was used by the German army to take pilots to an airfield in the North Cape. After the war, the ship became a cargo vessel carrying tradesmen and their goods across the fjords from the North Cape to the Hardanger Fjord. In 1958 was transformed and adapted for working as a trawler, having a one cylinder semi diesel Grenaa engine installed in 1964. In 1979, in the context of the conversion of the fishing fleet, the rigger Jack Ramberg initiated the Galea restoration. From 1989 to 2011 the ship was refitted by her current owner and used as a marine research vessel, becoming a flagship of the conservation of cetaceans, sea birds and turtles in the Mediterranean Sea and European marine conservation policy. It is estimated that around 60% of the ship’s hull is still original, made of double planking of pine joined with wooden pins. Built at a time when the boats had to be as fast and as safe as possible for fishermen, this Galea stands out with its narrow beam and deep draft as a vessel that reminds us of Viking times.
