Built by Pearce of Looe, Cornwall in 1919 as a yacht but on the lines of the local fishing boats. With the building of the railways to the West Country and the arrival of tourism the small village yards flourished as the visitors bought houses and wanted to get afloat. I know of 2 built to this size and design, both as yachts but the other one, Le Voyageur, has recently been broken up on the Dart. 50′ x 48’wl x 13′ x 6′. Planked in a yellow pine fastened with galvanised iron boat nails to heavy sawn oak frames on an oak back-bone. Pine deck over a ply sub deck. New varnished iroko wheel-house. Lovely antique varnished teak hatch on the aft deck. Below she has a sea toilet in the bow, the galley is next aft then a bulkhead to the lovely saloon cabin. Aft of the saloon cabin and about midships is the owner’s cabin with a double berth to port, a single berth to stbd and a ladder between up to the wheel-house where there is the helm position to port, steps to below to stbd and seating around a table. Access to the aft cabin is through the teak hatch on the after deck. A door from the aft cabin gives access to the walk-in engine room. Gaff ketch rig on varnished masts. Twin Perkins 4107 42hp diesls, totally rebuilt 2007. New s/s fuel tanks. Truant became known in the ownership of author George Millar who took her through the French canals to the Med. She was the first yacht into Paris after the war, popular rumour says he entertained the Duke and Duchess of Windsor on board and eventually sold her on arrival in Greece. He wrote about this voyage in his book, Isobelle and the Sea. After this ownership, Truant fell on hard times until the recent refit, partly in Cornwall, latterly in Bristol. The deck has been replaced, the wheel-house replaced. In the last 12 months several frames have been replaced, some new planking, a new stem, a new rudder and all underwater seams have been raked out and recaulked. The vessel went afloat again in 2007 and makes not a drop of water. The Perkins engines have been fully rebuilt. The cabin accommodation is very attractive and she would make a comfortable live-aboard cruising home. A very competant, comfortable and attractive sea boat. Her Swedish owner is now spending less time in UK and knows the boat will benefot from new ownership. He is open to a part exchange or other ideas to ensure the survival of this interesting boat. She is now on the Historic Ship’s Register
