ROSE OF SHARON was designed by Starling Burgess and built in 1930 by Eastern Shipbuilding of Shelbourne, Nova Scotia. She was constructed for Thomas J. Lamont, President of the J.P. Morgan Co., who owned her until 1935. Her second owner; Fred Pope, owned and raced her under the name SAN CRISTOBAL II from 1935 to 1940. When Charles Stoll of Escanaba, Michigan became her third owner, he changed her name back to ROSE OF SHARON, and for 30 years he raced and cruised her in many Chicago/Mac races. Roy Wildman, a ship’s carpenter, bought and cruised ROSE OF SHARON from 1970 to 1973, and then spent three years on a restoration program when she changed hands to the present owner in Newport Beach, California. ROSE OF SHARON won the Mayor’s trophy race in New York in 1971; was the elapsed time record holder in Ancient Mariner race from San Diego to Maui in 13 days; in 1980 she was the overall winner in a 500 boat class in the Ensenada race – P.H.R.F., she was 2nd in class in the 1983 Victoria B.C. Swiftsure race, and 2nd place in the 1930 Bermuda race. She has won or placed well in the recent Ancient Mariner and Schooner races as well. The current owner has lavished a great deal of time, energy and money to maintain this beautiful schooner in the fashion that such a yacht deserves. Reluctantly ROSE OF SHARON is now available for a new owner to cruise in a truly “one of a kind” yacht. Maintained on a monthly basis, out of the water every year for bottom maintenance and paint, hull is painted when needed, always ready for cruising and sailing.
