Cardnell Brothers in Maylandsea, Essex built, we think, 4 of these centre-cock-pit yawls. The design was very innovative in it’s day giving a deep, safe centre-cock-pit, the privacy of a separate aft cabin, a comfortable saloon and an easily handled split rig. Built in 1932. 32′ x 28’wl x 8’3″ x 4’3″ + 3′ bowsprit. This was an inexplicably expensive construction using a double planked hull skin in mahogany, both skins laid horizontally with overlapping seams all copper fastened to close-spaced steamed timbers to give a very strong, resilient hull. Built with internal iron ballast in addition to the extenal iron keel, in present ownership a new 2.25 ton lead keel was cast and bolted on with aluminium bronze bolts in 2006 in order to remove the internal iron ballast and have a clean, clear bilge. The deck is raised forward of the centre cock-pit and both fore deck and aft coach-roof have distinctive camber with varnished sheer strake forward and varnished coamings aft. The fore deck and aft roof are epoxy glass sheathed pine. New teak fore hatch and sky-light. New teak seats and sole to the deep centre-cock-pit. Wheel steering on cables. Bronze deck fittings, sampson post forward, stainless steel pull-pit, push-pit and stanchions. Cutter headed bermudian yawl rig on varnished masts, stepped in galvanised tabernacles on deck. 2006 stainless steel rigging to external bronze chain plates. Lewmar self tailing sheet winches. Mainsail, mizzen, yankee on roller reefing gear, staysail on roller reefing gear all by Wilkinson Sails in 1999. 2003 mizzen staysail. 2001 cruising chute. Vetus Mitsubishi M3.10 22hp diesel installed in 1990 with centre-line prop gives 7knts. 20 gall fuel tank. 2 x 12v batteries 6 berths. Baby Blake in the fore peak. Bulkhead door to stbd galley with gas cooker and s/s sink, locker to port. saloon cabin with port and stbd settee berths, gimballed drop leaf table between. 5’10” head-room. Pipe cots can be rigged over the settees. Door and step up to centre cock-pit. Door and step down into the aft cabin with double berth to port. GPS, auto-pilot, log, sounder, life jackets, Danbuoy, fire extinguishers. anchor and chain, inflatable dinghy with outboard engine etc etc. In 20 years ownership this very interesting yacht has been extensively improved and refitted using yard work and is a credit to her owner and the yard.
