Asking price now $149,000! DIAMOND HEAD is a stunning piece of yachting history. Commissioned L’APACHE, she was constructed in 1938 by the Fellows & Stewart yard in Wilmington, California to a design by George Craig, the yard’s in house designer. She has a colorful history as a Transpac racer, maybe most notorious for a man overboard incident in the 1951 Transpac when Ted Sierks, a 40 year old Life Magazine photographer who was aboard to document the race, fell overboard 800 miles from Hawaii. After L’APACHE and several other boats searched for him in vain, some Navy vessels joined in and miraculously found him alive after almost 30 hours in the water. On the return trip from the 1953 Transpac, the top of her main mast fractured and upon arriving back in the Seattle area she underwent a refit in which she was converted from a ¾ cutter to the present yawl configuration and her current raised salon was added. She was re-christened DIAMOND HEAD. In 1959, she was purchased in California and sailed to Seattle. Since then, she has been under the ownership of the same family who have raced and cruised Puget Sound and the Inside Passage. She also returned to Hawaii in the 1961 Transpac race. With her long overhangs and signature raised salon, DIAMOND HEAD’S profile has an unmistakable beauty. Her varnished teak cabin and toe rail gleam and her bronze and chrome hardware echoes back to a different era. Below decks, her interior accommodations are beautifully constructed. Her large salon windows provide spectacular views from a raised dinette, a large galley and spacious owner’s stateroom.
