Harrison Butler Z Four tonner. Length on deck 21’6” Lwl 19’ Beam 7’2” Draft 4’3” Designed by Dr Tom Harrison Butler, highly reputed for his study of balance of hull and rig. Built 1938. Some 30 boats were built to this design by Lockharts of Brentwood in the 1930’s as an early production line build and proved very successful. This delightful, very capable little yacht had a major refit in 1998 with further improvement in present ownership. Long keel with lovely heart-shaped transom stern, transom hung rudder and strong sheer. Planked yellow pine all copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers on an oak back-bone. Close inspection revealed that most of the steamed timbers through the midships section and some aft are in fact twin laminations indicating they have probably been replaced at some time in the past. Several are showing signs of cracking at the turn of the bilge so all through the midships section behind the settee berths they have been sistered in the 1998 refit, a neat job. Iron external ballast keel, phosphor bronze bolts all replaced in 2005. Angle-iron ring frame in way of the mast. This ring frame is cleverly set off the planking, flying down the inside face this avoiding many corrosion problems. Several ferrous strap floors are fitted on pads laid on the inside face of the planking, not on the timbers as is usual. Apparently new s/s bolts in the floor arms. Original pine deck replaced with ply deck and sheathed with epoxy glass in 1998 refit. Teak toe rails. Varnished teak fore hatch. Recently regalvanised stemhead fitting with stbd side chain roller. Varnished teak coach-roof with 2 bronze opening ports each side, teak grab rails. Varnished teak sliding hatch and twin doors to the cabin entrance. Varnished teak T&G cock-pit bulkhead. Engine control panel in the bulkhead to stbd of the entrance door. Little bronze framed opening window in the port side bulkhead to match. Deep, very safe little cock-pit in teak with scrubbed seat locker lids each side, access to stowage and 6 gall stainless steel fuel tank under aft deck. Stowage under the side decks. Manual bilge pump under the stbd side deck. Scrubbed teak triangular sole board lifts to access the shaft and stern bilge. Gas bottle stowed in fwd end of the stbd seat locker, lift-up lid to access the turn-off. Pin rail across the after cock-pit coaming with pegs to hold the tiller – a simple form of auto-pilot. 3/4 bermudian sloop rig on varnished pine mast with single spreaders and jumpers over, set in newly galvanised steel tabernacle just fwd of the coach-roof. Galvanised rigging wire replaced around 2000, twin lowers and cap shr
