A class grew up in Aldeburgh and St Mawes but the design really came to fame after Adlard Coles won the 1950 Trans-Atlantic Race in the slightly larger (32?) Cohoe. The Tumlare has a slim, slippery hull with elongated forward sections and the distinctive canoe stern with stern-hung rudder. She has a high aspect fractional Bermudian rig with the fore-stay set well inboard from the stemhead. This example was rebuilt by Richard Riggs in 2001 in Suffolk. In the rebuild the deck was replaced entirely including deck beams. Damaged frames were repaired, new stern post, new garboards, new cabin top and cock-pit. In present ownership further work was done by boat builder Bernie Yendle in Cornwall between 2005 and 2008 Planked in Oregon pine all copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers with clenched copper nails. In the most recent Cornish refit all doubled timbers were replaced and new partial intermediate timbers added for additional strength. The underwater seams were splined. Heavy timber floors. The 4 midships floors have additional laminations carrying the arms well up the hull sides. Lead ballast keel with phosphor bronze keel bolts. 2 bolts were replaced in the most recent refit. The hull has an exceptionally fair finish. The deck was new in the 2005 refit in painted marine ply run out to the deck edge with a varnished ¼? mahogany coverboard recessed into the outer edge and varnished mahogany king plank to give a very attractive finish. In the 2005 refit the coach-roof was replaced to the original design with varnished mahogany coamings run back to form the cock-pit coamings with nicely radiussed after corners. The cock-pit coamings are capped in tufnol strip. Fixed oval window each side in the cabin coach-roof. Laminated coach-roof deck beams in different coloured wood. The well-cambered coach-roof deck is marine ply, varnished on the underside, epoxy-glass sheathed on the outside. Varnished mahogany sliding entrance hatch and wash-boards. Grab rails each side on the roof. Varnished mahogany fore hatch on the fore deck. The cock-pit is not self draining, deep, with a varnished mahogany seat across the back. A bridge deck is laid with scrubbed deck slats. The centre section of the bridge deck is a lid which lifts off the access the deepest part of the bilge below. The cock-pit sole is laid in open, scrubbed teak slats. The tiller is beautifully laminated in different coloured woods with chromed bronze rudderhead fitting. Main sheet post in the middle of the cock-pit. Fractional Bermudan sloop rig on varnished, round section mast stepped through the deck onto the keel. Twin spreaders with jumper struts at the same level as the upper spreaders to take the diamond masthead support stays. Fore stay to the upper spreaders fitting. External U-section aluminium main sail track. Spinnaker pole track on the forward face of the mast with single ring car. Stainless steel rigging to internal stainless steel chain plates ? 2 each side to take single lowers and cap shrouds. Split standing back-stay with tackle adjuster. Running back-stays to the after cars on the sheet tracks led to jamming cleats. The fore stay is rigged on a Sailspar roller furling gear to a stainless steel fitting on the fore deck, well inboard of the stemhead. The Knud Reimers original underdeck forestay roller mechanism remains in place. Varnished round section boom fitted with roller reefing mechanism and screw operated mainsail clew outhaul tensioner.
