WATERMELON is an original marconi rigged Herreshoff 12 1/2 which has been fully restored and well cared for.  Although she does not have her original number plaque, the Herreshoff Registry has researched her history and determined that she was built between 1939 and 1943 and was raced in Marblehead, Massachusetts under the name “Curlew” with sail no. 5.  The report states that she may have originally been designated hull no. 1482 — in the absence of an certain original hull number she has been assigned hull no. 9028.   WATERMELON underwent a thorough and extensive restoration by Woodman Boats of Arundel, Maine in 2009/2010 and is ready for the water.  Her sails have been used less than one season.  She includes a custom Triad galvanized trailer.  A 2010 vessel research report from the Herreshoff registry is available.   Designed by Nathanael G. Herreshoff in 1914 as a training boat for young sailors in Buzzards Bay, the 12 ½ is perhaps the most beloved small craft of all time. The boat can comfortably seat four adults for day sailing adventures, yet she is fun to sail single-handed as well. Due to a heavy keel the 12 ½ has the feel of a much larger craft and is quite stable in gusty conditions.   WATERMELON’s restoration by Woodman Boats included: New deck. New coaming. New toe rails. New seats and seat supports. New transom. New sails (now with less than one season of use). New boom. New floor timbers. New aft bulkhead. Replacement frames where required.
