PAULINE

PAULINE was built and designed by Roy Wallace of the Newbert & Wallace Yard in Thomaston, Maine, in 1948. Newbert & Wallace had a reputation for building workboats to yacht-like standards. (This broker recalls a fisherman from New Bedford saying that if he were caught in a winter storm offshore, he hoped it would be on a Newbert & Wallace-built trawler.) A WoodenBoat magazine article about sardine carriers referred to PAULINE as “One of the prettiest and best-kept carriers on the Maine coast” (WoodenBoat no. 59, July-August 1984, p. 74). Elsewhere in the same article, Roy Wallace was quoted as saying, “When you got outside Monhegan in one of my boats in the winter time, you knew you had a good home under you.”

 

 



 

 

When PAULINE was converted from one of Maine’s most admired sardine carriers to a passenger-carrying motor yacht in 1988, her new owners seized the opportunity to design the ideal layout for a small group of passengers to cruise the coast of Maine in comfort on a classic-style vessel. The result is the PAULINE of today, whose style would make one think that she had originally been designed as a classic passenger vessel. The graceful double-ended lines retained from her first incarnation as a sardine carrier only enhance the sturdiness and well-thought-out proportions of the classic-style motor vessel she is in her present life. The PAULINE was kept simple but traditional on the exterior for ease of maintenance, with simple but elegant interior appointments. The vessel as a whole was kept simple, yet was designed to work efficiently both for passengers and for the crew.

The present owner is continuing with this same philosophy and making sure that all work is of high quality execution and materials. For just one example, he acquired 120,000 board feet of old-growth long-leaf yellow pine for PAULINE?s new planking in order to duplicate the original material and because it was considered the best material for the purpose.

With by far the vast part of the rebuilding and restoration work done by the present owner, a new owner is in a position to step in and determine some of the finishing. Formerly the PAULINE was USCG licensed to carry 12 overnight passengers and 30 day passengers. During the current project PAULINE?s owner has had both his own surveyor and a U.S. Coast Guard inspector periodically visit the vessel in order to document the work for purposes of renewing the USCG certificate.
