Sterling Class sloop.                                      Kim Holman designed the Sterling as a fast pocket cruiser and followed on with his possibly better known Twister which proved very successful on the race circuit. The Sterling is often considered to be the cruising version of the Twister, she sails just as well but has a little more volume for accommodation.   This yacht was Kim Holman’s own yacht, built for him by his brother Jack at his Upham’s Yard, Brixham Devon in 1961. She had an RORC rating. Jack Holman built 19 Sterlings at Uphams in the 1960’s, a big production in those days for a single design proving the success of the Sterling.   This owner is a great admirer of Kim Holman’s work and previously owned Shaker, another of Holman’s own yachts. He has owned the Sterling for over 10 years. The previous owner was a well-known yacht photographer who did a major refit on her in 2000 when she had a new mast, rig and sails, new wiring, new keel bolts and much more.   This is an exceptional yacht, the epitome of the wooden boat, in sound and very tidy condition, lovely varnish, very much part of the family and ready to sail. All copper fastened to steam oak timbers on an oak back-bone. The topside plank seams are splined for a fair hull. Beamshelf and single stringer each side. Ample timber hanging and lodging knees. The two structural midships ply bulkheads provide mast support and stiffness to the hull.   External iron ballast keel 2.15 tons. Keel bolts all replaced in 1999. The Sterling is built with heavy oak floors and a number of galvanised strap floors midships in way of the water tank in the bilge. This is a compact and very strong hull both in her design and construction. The hull is very fair, painted with a white enamel with a gold cove line to pronounce the sheer.
