Holman 28                             Part 1 regd.        Designed by Kim Holman, built by Gordon Armstrong Marine, Scarborough 1962.   An extract from The Humber Yawl Club Magazine, 1962 describes how Mr G. Wood admired Kim Holman’s Sterling Class sloop but finding that they were all built by brother Jack Holman at his Upham’s Yard in Brixham, Devon which was too far from home for regular supervision, he contacted Kim Holman and found that a 28’ design was already on the drawing board. He signed a contract with Armstrong Marine in June 1961 and the yacht was launched on schedule by his wife on 2nd May 1962. After his first season he expressed his satisfaction with the yacht and she remained in his ownership until 1970 when she was sold and sailed down to Rye. Having already sailed her often, the present owner bought her in 1999 and she remains berthed in Rye. From Rye, she has cruised to Holland, Brittany, the Channel Isles and the Scillies and it is with great regret that advancing years oblige the owner to pass her on.   Length on deck                                  28’7” Lwl                                                     22’1” Beam                                                  8’5” Draft                                                  4’10” Thames Tonnage                                8TM   Planked in 7/8” mahogany above wl, larch below wl, fastened with copper nails and roves to 1 ½” x 1 ¼” steam bent rock elm timbers at 7” centres. Very fair, white enamelled hull with blue boot top. Varnished mahogany transom. The hull was stripped to bare wood in 2009 and repainted.   2 tons iron ballast keel. Galvanised keel bolts. 4 drawn in 2007, 2 good bolts refitted, 2 under the engine replaced with new. 3cwt lead trimming ballast. Oak floors in the ends with 6 galvanised strap floors in the midships area under the water tank.   The deck is laid in ½” marine play, sheathed and painted with varnished mahogany toe rail and rubbing strake. 2 pairs of mooring cleats on the deck forward and aft. Substantial oak Sampson post on the fore deck. Stainless steel stemhead fitting with twin chain rollers takes the fore stay.
