Pearson Rhodes 41 Boats Review and Specs
Year: 1966Manufacturer: Dick Sciuto
Price: US$49,900
This is a modern classic cruising boat that has a Phillip Rhodes design that was built by Pearson yachts in 1966. It is a good heavy hull lay up with a full keel design with attached rudder that contains a Yanmar diesel. There is a dark green awlgrip hull with roller furling genoa gear, alum masts, and sleeps a total of 6 in two cabins with a large enclosed head with shower that is well equipped for cruising. This is an excellent boat for family cruising. “Hotspur” is a true classic from the age of overbuilt fiberglass yachts of the late sixties. Copied from the famous bounty by Phillip Rhodes and built by Pearson, this graceful yacht still holds her own in cruising and ocean racing; sister-ships of Hotspur have won the Newport to Bermuda race on two occasions. Hotspur, herself, raced in the difficult Marion to Bermuda race in 2009 and performed beautifully in the two day Atlantic gale which distinguished that race as the worst in nearly thirty years. Hotspur has been upgraded with a clubfooted self-tending staysail on a removable baby stay, so she goes from family cruiser to racing yacht in a matter of minutes. She has ALL NEW sails, including; symmetrical and asymmetrical spinnakers, staysail and yankee, main and mizzen, and a 155% tri-radial genoa and 100% tri-radial “blade” jib. There is even a new main topsail, nowadays somewhat rare, but a very traditional sail of bygone days. Hotspur is a traditional sailors dream and a real attention-getter on the waterfront. In addition to her traditional lines and new suit of sails, she was also upgraded with all new electronics, including; Raymarine chart plotter, radar, knot log, apparent wind direction and speed indicator, the new style removable sonar/knot-log paddle, repeater screen in the cabin at the nav-station and newly installed LED lighting throughtout the cabin. The cabin jas been refurbished with white bulkheads and varnished mahogany trim, Herreshoff style, for a snappy, traditional interior. She is also blue-water ready, having passed the strict Marion-Bermuda race inspection with such required items as an interior operated “gusher” bilge pump, lee-cloths for the bunks, emergency tiller, lock-downs for all soleboards and locker covers. As of this writing (9/10/10) she is in the water and ready to sail away.
