Morgan Giles fishing Boats Review and Specs

Year: 1967
Manufacturer: Wooden Ships
Price: £36,000
(US$57,798)

A working fishing boat. 45’6″ x 16′ x 7′ Built by Morgan Giles of Teignmouth, Devon, in 1967, one of a pair built for West Country fishing. Morgan Giles was a yacht designer and yard owner best known for many lovely sailing yachts. This fishing boat is therefore built to a particularly good standard and has been fishing in present family ownership for 30 years. Conventional construction with 2.25″ iroko planking in the topsides, 2.5″ in the bottom, on 7″ x 3″ oak frames, 9″ in the throats, at 14″ centres. Oak planking is used round the stern to get the turn. Galvanised spike nails. Oak back-bone. Oak floors. Topsides finished varnished. Pine deck, caulked and payed. Bulwarks all round on oak stanchions, separate from the frame-heads. Steel wheel-house. Alliminium shelter deck added a few years ago for crew comfort when fishing in bad weather, easily removed. Hydraulic steering to steel plate rudder. Dorman 6Q 6-cyl diesel, 214hp (159Kw. 8knts at 1250rm, max 9knts 1600rpm. 1000rpm when fishing. This engine was formerly the stand-by engine in the Torpoint Ferry (Plymouth) and was installed by the present owmner in 1996 to replace the original engine of the same model. It has been relined once with top overhaul at the same time and has done approx 3000 hours per year. Currently in everyday commission with no problems. The original engine has been kept for spares which should give a further life of many years, given the present good maintenance schedule. Renjes hydraulic single lever controls gear-box to 4-blade prop. 3500 litres diesel in 2 steel tanks in the engine room. Fully compliant with current regulations – fire systems, fuel shut-off, bilge pump systems etc. The vessel has a fore peak for warps etc. Midships hold with hatch forward of the wheel-house. Large, hydraulic trawl winch forward. The hold has just standing head-room and is divided into fish bays with ice compartment forward and ice hatch on deck. Midships water-tight bulkhead to the engine room. Engine room is accessed from the wheel-house, a vertical ladder with door forward to the engine room and door aft to the aft cabin. Aft cabin with 2 berths. Stooping head-room but adequate space to move around. Hydraulic steering gear in the lazarette accessed from the aft cabin. Shaft gland below the aft cabin floor. Small galley in the deck-house. Toilet over the bulwarks! Secure, working wheel-house with instruments all round. Good helmsman’s chair. Radar, radio, sounders and fish-finders, new RNLI MoB Guardian system. Usual safety gear to MCA requirements. This vessel is still working in commercial fishing, husband and wife owners. She has provided the family income for 30 years but the time has come to hang up his nets and retire. She will continue working until sold. It is unlikely that she will continue in commercial fishing so we look at such boats as potential comversion to pleasure use. As a pleasure vessel this one is a nice size, she appears to be structurally sound and of course is ready for sea at a moment’s notice. She would convert readily to pleasure use by the removal of the shelter deck and conversion of the fish hold to cabin space. It would probably be desireable to remove the trawl winch and steel gantrys and net reel aft and raise a coach-roof midships over the fish hold to give additional head-room. The dedicated engine room takes up a lot of space of course and at some time in the future it is possible that this present massive machinery could be replaced by a smaller engine though it will never last as long as this Dorman. A more fundamental conversion with a smaller engine in a smaller engine room would significantly increase the accommodation space if needed but would be unnecessary and indeed undesirable in the first instance. It is not often we see a working fishing boat for sale and certainly not a fishing boat in
