The MY Sarsen is an ice rated vessel designed for voyages into the high latitudes of the polar regions as well as other areas of the world. It is registered with Det Norske Veritas (DNV) the world wide, independent foundation whose charter is to safeguard life, property and the environment.

The MY Sarsen has the following class designation of DNV 1A1 (Ice) which means that the vessel is required to undertake regular bi-annual and 5 yearly surveys with DNV to maintain its class registration and is rated for ice operations. In addition to the DNV classification, the vessel complies with the ISM (International Safety Management) code. The vessel has 2 x 7 metre fully enclosed life boats, designed for long term survival and rescue. The crew are regularly training for launch of these vessels as well as many other safety routines.

The length overall is 69 metres with a width of 13 metres and a gross tonnage of 1,658 tonnes. It is propelled by an efficient diesel powered Normo Oil 4SA motor with 9 cylinders and reaches a cruising speed of 9-10 knots. The vessel is capable of carrying 400 tonne of diesel fuel. Based on a speed of 9-10 knots the engine uses approximately 220 litres of fuel per hour.

 

 



 

 

On board the MY Sarsen are located 3 smaller craft such as the 7.5 metre rigid hull tender boat, the 6.4 metre fishing boat and a 4.5 metre tender boat. All craft are in first class condition. Each of these boats can be loaded onto the ship by 2 rear cranes or 1 forward crane. Each crane has a lifting capacity in excess of 200 kilograms.

The vessel can accommodate up to 50 people which will include a crew of 20. The crew have been recruited over a period of 3 years and have a thorough understanding of the vessel’s performance and capabilities. The crew includes an Ice Master with extensive experience in polar regions. A listing of the crew and their designated positions are attached.

Disembarking the vessel whilst at sea is made conveniently by the rear platform where mooring the tender craft to the platform is a simple task.

The vessel has it’s own “black water” tanks which are capable of storing waste water for transporting out of environmentally sensitive area. A reverse osmosis plant is available and produces 20,000 litres of freshwater per day. See www.sarsen.com.au for more information.
