Owners comments   This ‘classic’ S&S Swan 40, originally ‘Moby Dick’ and hull #44 of 51 built, was commissioned in 1972 and then held in continuous ownership by the original owner until 2005, berthed at Schleswig (close to Kiel) in the Baltic.  Much of the original vessel’s documentation is retained.  I am told that she was sailed only during the summer months and wintered ashore with rig out, in a heated shed – this would account for her particularly fine condition throughout and it is clear that she has been professionally cared for and cherished throughout her life.  She was sold in 2005 and brought to the UK where she was promptly listed for re-sale.  I consider myself fortunate in having been able to purchase her in the autumn of 2005, renaming her ‘Aelana’ and to have enjoyed a period of ownership, though employment and domestic commitments result in my now offering her for sale.   When purchased I entrusted her to Hamble Yacht Services who prepared and executed a renovation schedule to my requirements during the winter months 2005/6.  This was to ensure her continued seaworthiness and integrity, to restore the original sailplan and importantly to be a delight to sail.  Specifically this included:   Gelcoat peel and hull faired in epoxy Replaced rudder bearings Replaced all standing rigging with stainless wire – removal of self tacking jib track and additional forward cap shrouds, reverting to baby stay Replaced stanchions and guardwire Replaced running rigging and all blocks   Other work commissioned during 2006 included:   New complete sail wardrobe supplied by Hyde Sails Engine fuel and water plumbing replaced Fuel tank emptied and cleaned New stainless galley stove Gas plumbing replaced and tested All bunks reupholstered to forepeak, saloon and quarter berths Cabin sole sanded and repainted Cabin sole boards revarnished Saloon table revarnished Engine box & companion way steps revarnished Engine box relined with soundproofed, fire resistant lining Fresh water tanks removed, cleaned, new hot & cold water hoses replaced, and new taps with water filter installed   And much more, too detailed to list here!   She was lightly sailed for a couple of seasons in the Solent and occasionally raced with some success in club, classic Swan and JOG events, and placing well in RTI.  With an ORC handicap of 0.9?? (2008) she punched above her weight with a good crew onboard. She has been decommissioned, lying ashore at HYS for the past 2+ years, rig out and securely cocooned under a plastic shrinkwrap canopy while I have worked overseas.  She now awaits a new owner with the time and energy to sail her to her potential and is ready to be recommissioned at HYS.
