Classic IOR racer designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Tartan Yachts in 1975. Production for this model ran from 1972 until about 1976 and only 86 hulls were built. The Tartan 41 has had a rather significant impact on ocean racing, both then and now. Inspired by the S&S-designed PJ 43 (Palmer Johnson), the Tartan 41 was designed more precisely into the (then) new IOR rating rule. She has faired well ever since in long distance ocean racing, even under the more recent IMS rating rule. Although quite fast in her time, by today’s standards the Tartan 41 is a moderate displacement boat, and indeed was very sturdily built. She was not “extreme” IOR, rather carried more moderate ends, more displacement, a cruising interior, a heavy duty, no-nonsense rig and enjoyed greater positive stability than some of the later lighter IOR racing machines. Over the years, this has made the Tartan 41 quite attractive for sailors interested in acquiring a very performance oriented, but strong and capable offshore cruising boat, without spending an arm and a leg. “Lightning” comes with a strong racing pedigree and with a custom 65′ mast, 16 sails and proven bluewater experience. She is a comfortable and capable fast cruising boat. Significant upgrades and outfitting will need to be done by the next owner to bring her up to today’s standards, but she has a good structure and great racing design to start with.
