  The Ranger 33 is often considered as one of the top 10 plastic classics – considered to be great boats. Gary Mull designed the boat and Ranger Yachts, an affiliate of Jensen Marine built the boats which are still considered popular today as they promised high quality construction and high performance on the race course. Mull’s designs were legendary. The Cal 20 was the boat to beat for inland racing and Mull’s Santana 22 – his first design beat out the Cal. His Ranger 37 design won the SORC, which was the proving ground for the time and The Ranger 23 became one of the hottest one design racers. Untold numbers have proved successful as coastal cruisers and a few have done ocean crossings and in 2002 a R-33 won Division A in the Pacific Cup and another took 2nd in the same race and 6th overall. Back in the 70’s the O’Days were low-priced, the Cals were mid-priced and the Rangers were at the higher end of boat production. At first Mull wanted a narrow and racy hull for the R-33, but later settled on the “combo” boat concept providing speed on the race course and comfort below for the cruisers. Ranger boats also opened up the East Coast Market at the time and the R-33 outperformed their East Coast contemporaries who also enjoyed her graceful sheer, reverse transom and low cabin trunk. She is classy, yet modern looking and her 4,500 lb. lead keel encased in fiberglass with spade rudder makes her very responsive and the short spreaders and inboard chain plates offer a tighter sheeting angle for better upwind sailing. The early R-33’s were tiller, but wheels became standard along with the slotted aluminum toe rails, which replaced the original teak. The R-33 relatively narrow beam of  9’7” won’t compare with beamy contemporary cruising (and slower) vessels, but she has 6+’ headroom, will sleep 6 and can be found very reasonably priced making them ideal bargains for a couple or small family.  They have survived extreme weather conditions, have done long distance travel and are considered to be good-looking, well balanced and a great performer on all points of sail.  Her interior is bright and airy, her cockpit is comfortable, and she can easily be converted from racer to cruiser and back again.  Motivated seller.
