Designing The Ericson Independence 31, Bruce King set out to fashion a performance cruiser for two people. He chose to look toward the traditional style. By many accounts one of the most graceful boats afloat. Her clipper bow, delicate trailboards, heart-shaped transom soft spring to the sheer appeals with the prominent designs of the 19th century. The traditional full keel hull shape has been modernized to provide less drag and wetted surface. A partially skegged outboard rudder coupled with a more modern shaped keel provides exceptional directional stability and enhanced up-wind performance. The deck is slightly cambered for extra support and quick run-off accommodates a low-profile trunk cabin. High coamings encircle the cockpit minimize the deck wash from entering the cockpit and provide comfortable lounging. The sloop rig coupled with a Harkin roller furling Genoa provides easy handling and excellent performance on all points of sail. The furling gear enables you to reduce sail area in a hurry from the cockpit in the event of heavy weather. The roller bearing main sail traveler, mid-cockpit and in arms reach, eliminates the risk of a heavy gust surprising the skipper.
