MARINERO, cold-molded of beautiful Kauri wood, draws attention wherever she goes. The original design brief for MARINERO, a Brin Wilson 43, called for a vessel that was rugged enough to face the rigors of the Southern ocean; responsive and competitive on the race course; comfortable for a family or cruising couple whether out for the weekend or on a long distance voyage; and gorgeous to look at when the anchor is down at the end of a boisterous day of sailing. In 1980 she clearly met these objectives. Today, after a complete retrofit in 2001 and continued significant upgrades by each of her owners, MARINERO may be older, but she is clearly even better. Designed and built by Brin Wilson Boat Builders Ltd of Auckland New Zealand, leaders in the development of cold-molded cruising and racing yachts, MARINERO is strong, resilient, watertight, naturally insulated, and of moderately light displacement. Both the cold-molded hull and interior joinery are constructed of Kauri, a wood indigenous to New Zealand and especially suited to boat building. Upon her completion, Richard Wilson sailed MARINERO to the United States where the design was introduced into the United States market. His brother, Bob Wilson, continued on to Seattle, where MARINERO was sold to her first owner. In 2001 and 2002 MARINERO underwent a significant refit at the reknowned Jespersen Boat Builders in Sidney, B.C. The scope of work included a  redesigned cockpit for short or single handed sailing, a new rudder designed and built by naval architect Paul Bieker, and new pedestal steering, rigging, deck hardware and boat systems. The hull and deck were painted and her custom Sterling light green hull still sparkles. The original joinery and layout of the interior is timeless and was left as original with the exception of new upholstery, stainless steel counter and floorboards. New navigation and communication electronics and a new Yanmar engine were added in 2005. The current owner of MARINERO has continued the tradition of thoughtful upgrades and consistent maintenance. An efficient and quiet  Frigoboat refrigeration system with super insulated vacuum panels was installed; the keel was reglassed and faired; safety was enhanced with a new EPIRB and the addition of immersion suits; and the deck and cabin top (and crew!) are now protected by a three section boat cover. MARINERO’s bottom is painted, the zincs are replaced, barnacle ban is applied, and the Max-Prop is serviced each year. Today, MARINERO remains the perfect Pacific Northwest performance cruising sailboat fully capable of offshore passage making. She is safe and strongly built. Her sail plan, modern rudder and moderate displacement provide excellent sailing performance in all conditions. Her cockpit and rigging layout make the boat easy to sail singlehanded or shorthanded. Accommodations are comfortable for one or two couples or a family. The naturally insulating hull is quiet and reduces temperature and humidity fluctuations within the cabin. The  exterior epoxy fiberglass skin, high quality polyurethane paint and limited exterior bright work keep maintenance requirements manageable.
