Marinero is a particularly outstanding example of New Zealand sailing yacht design and construction, produced by the esteemed Brin Wilson Boat Builders Ltd of Auckland. New Zealand sailing yachts have, by necessity been designed and constructed to withstand the rigors of the oceans surrounding New Zealand and Australia, and offshore races such as the Southern Cross Cup and the Sydney to Hobart race. Brin Wilson and several other New Zealand boat builders were pioneers in the development of cold-molded construction of cruising and racing yachts utilizing local new Zealand kauri wood, which has similar properties to Alaska yellow cedar. Strong, resilient, watertight, naturally insulated, and of moderately light displacement, New Zealand cold-molded sailing yachts are renowned for being safe, sea kindly, fast, responsive, and beautiful with their exposed natural kauri finishes. Brin Wilson’s sons, Bob and Richard, took over the company from their father in 1974. Marinero was designed by Richard Wilson and meticulously constructed in 1980 for an introduction into the United States market. Richard personally sailed the boat from Auckland to San Francisco. Bob Wilson then sailed her to Seattle, where she was sold. In 2001, a new owner began a complete refit and a modernization of certain parts of the boat to match the timeless integrity of the cold-molded hull, enlisting the expertise of the highly regarded Jespersen Boat Builders of Sidney, British Columbia. Since then, Marinero has been entirely refinished and virtually every piece of sailing, mechanical, electrical and cabin equipment has been replaced with the finest available. A marine survey in 2007 estimated that the replacement value of the boat at the time was $680,000. Marinero is the perfect Pacific Northwest performance cruising sailboat and occasional racer, and is also fully capable of offshore passage making if desired. It is safe and strongly built. Its sail plan, modern rudder and moderately light displacement provide excellent sailing performance in all conditions, upwind and downwind. Its cockpit and rigging layout make the boat very easy to sail singlehanded or shorthanded. Accommodations are comfortable for one or two couples or a family. The naturally insulating wood hull is quiet and reduces temperature and humidity fluctuations within the cabin. Maintenance requirements are manageable because of the hull’s exterior epoxy fiberglass skin, high quality polyurethane paint and limited exterior brightwork. Marinero’s beauty, inside and out, makes the boat a head turner in every harbor or port. Marinero’s current owners bought her in 2007 and have steadily maintained and upgraded her. Here is the list maintenance and upgrades since 2007.
