KZ 3, Wright on White is one of three “Plastic Fantastics” designed by Laurie Davidson, Bruce Farr and Ron Holland to challenge for the 1987 America’s Cup in Perth, Western Australia. Being the first 12 Metre yachts of GRP construction the designers were challenged by strict scantling requirements. Almost 25 years later, KZ3, KZ5 and KZ7 have proven to be the benchmark for stiffness and constructional integrity with the benefit of far less hull maintenance then their aluminum sisterships. KZ3 and KZ5 would make an excellent pair for match racing. A complete refurbishment of KZ 3 commenced in 2005 and continued through optimization of her keel, rudder, new mast and entirely new sail wardrobe in 2007. In the summer of 2007 she won the European Tour of Porto Cervo and St. Tropez and was leading the 12 Metre World Championships when the series was abandoned. She was chartered for the 2009 World Championships and after a spirited, closely contested series placed second to KZ7. All three “Plastic Fantastics” have been optimized to the limit. The “arms race” in the 12 Metre Grand Prix Division is over. With an up to date sail wardrobe, hardware and sailing systems no capital expenditure is required to sail KZ3 to the starting line. Plans call for her to be campaigned in 2011 in memory of her late owner and family, culminating with the 12 Metre North American Championships in Newport, September 23-26 2011.
