SKOL is a beautiful and sea worthy pilothouse ketch/cutter with classic lines, a clipper bow, a gentle shear and a “sweetheart” transom. “SKOL” (which means “cheers” in Norwegian), was designed by William Garden and built under American Bureau of Shipping standards for the Mikelson Yacht Company by Hudson Enterprises of Taiwan. She was commissioned in October of 1988, sailed by her first owners until 2000, and then purchased by her present owners who have made extensive improvements to her and have sailed up and down the US East Coast and throughout the Caribbean. She is US documented, has a MARAD (U.S. Maritime Administration) Jones Act waiver, and is authorized to carry up to 12 passengers for hire. Her present owners imported her into Mexico in February 2006. The present owners have come to love the Rio Dulce area of Guatemala and keep SKOL there at a very nice and secure marina. SKOL is stately and a real head-turner when she enters or moves about in any harbor. She is 62′ overall, 51′ on deck, 40′ at the waterline and has a 14′ beam. She carries 1,600 square feet of sail in four fore and aft sails, and in addition, she can fly a full cruising spinnaker. She is solid fiberglass (Awlgrip on topsides), with natural teak decks, carries 14,000 pounds of ballast and has a total displacement of 58,000 lbs. She is powered by the well known Ford Lehman, 90 HP diesel, and carries a Northern Lights 5kw diesel generator. Both diesels are easily accessed via large hatches in the pilothouse floor. With a full keel and plenty of sail she is a sturdy and comfortable ocean-going ketch. Yet she is easily handled by a cruising couple. Her mainmast height is just 64′ allowing her to be ICW friendly. With her full keel and attached rudder she draws 6′ 6′, not too much inshore and not too little ofshore. She has two helm stations, one outside in the cockpit with full engine controls, gauges and instrumentation, and one inside, also with full engine controls, guages and instrumentation. A Sleipner “Sidepower” bow thruster makes maneuvering in tight quarters effortless. SKOL’s interior is signature Taiwanese, hand crafted teak, with plenty of opening hatches, large clear windows, stainless port lights and even several deck prisms. Her interior includes the roomy pilothouse, galley & inside navigation station, a generous master cabin aft, a dual purpose mid-ship cabin or main saloon, with wood burning stove & settee with table (which converts to a spacious queen berth), a fully finished workshop with workbench, a forward V-berth, and two private heads (each with a shower and electric head). The generous master king berth is a very spacious 77″ x 77″. Headroom throughout the boat is about 6′ 4″. The galley has two refrigerators and a freezer, all three with holding plates and operating from either a 120 VAC compressor or a main engine compressor. SKOL is well designed, well built and beautiful inside and out. When the present owners purchased her in 2000 she was equipped with some worthwhile cruising equipment including a MarineAir 16,000 BTU reverse-cycle air conditioning & heating system, a Northern Lights 5kw 120 VAC generator, a Lopi wood burning stove, an Indesit 120 VAC washer/dryer, Max-Air 120 VAC 4-stage scuba compressor and a Switlik 6 man liferaft. In 2002 the new owners, contemplating some extended cruising decided to refit and upgrade SKOL extensively. In 2002 they replaced SKOL’s existing masts and booms with two new Forespar aluminum masts with Leisurefurl booms, (main and mizzen, with in-boom furling), a Forespar main boom vang, a new Schaefer headsail furling system, new chainplates, new standing and running rigging, new North sails and 2 new cockpit-mounted Lewmar 54 pushbutton electric winches. In 2002 they also added a new “Sidepower” bow thruster, in addition to a new Spectra 15 GPH watermaker. A new AB 10.5′ hard-bottom inflatable dinghy was purchased in 2004 wit
