This Alex Simonis designed ( Four Cats 53′ ) is a unique luxury catamaran needing only the addition of fuel for the new owners to sail on her next ocean passage. ( the owners have achieved a max speed under sail of 17 knots. Average sailing in 20 knots broad reach 13 knots ) The interior, all equipment and appliances were chosen by the owners to give maximum comfort at anchor or at sea. Numerous extras were added to give ease of handling and maintenance. The Aero Rig enables easy single-handed sailing in any weather without leaving the cockpit. The owner has the following to say: ” Once in the Indian ocean we had a sudden wind change which I missed and we did a chinese gibe in 43 knots with all sails up. No damage. In the doldrums off the Amazon we had the full main up and no jib, In the night we got hit by a typical local storm with horizontal rain. The seas were flat and the radar showed it should pass in 5 minutes. So I turned from a broad reach to dead downwind expecting it to pass. The autopilot had no trouble in controlling her ( it has never failed to control her because it is oversize ). We were doing 15 Knots and the wind over her was 47 knots. ie total 62 knots of wind. It lasted for an hour over us as we were going so fast. No adverse effects. Try that on a Lagoon!! ” She is currently being actively sailed by her owners. All equipment, tools and spares needed for sailing in remote regions are included in her sale. A survey on July 26, 2009 for 10-year insurance renewal showed no recommendations for any equipment or part of the boat. She has duel instruments in cockpit and forward facing nav. area. Apart from sail size changes the boat can be sailed and controlled from inside with a 360* visibility. the Aero Rig gives perfect visibility forwards as foreboom is high and there is no jib obstruction. Detailed lists of each locker contents and all spare parts and tools are available. She has been examined by the presidents of 2 large catamaran construction companies and described as the finest catamaran of her type and purpose that they have seen. One added that the boat was a ?decadent use of space?. She has enabled her owners to sail 50,000 NM over 11 years in complete luxury, comfort, and without fear in any condition. Only the realization that age is creeping upon the owners is stimulating a sale ? with reluctance!!. THE STORY BEHIND THE BOAT “We had owned a Prout 33? catamaran for 7 years and had sailed her 15,000NM. We had always planned to retire early and sail round the world. For comfort we wanted a larger boat, about a 45? catamaran. We could not find a production company that would install an AeroRig (with its necessary hull reinforcement) and customize the interior the way we wanted it. We realized we needed a custom boat built. During enquiries Alex Simonis said that he had designed a 52? catamaran for 4 gentlemen in South Africa. Each would be different and have a 20 ton loaded weight. As one of the gentlemen had just dropped out Alex suggested I go to Cape Town to look. I had already designed in detail the interior we wanted and all the equipment. (We had learned a lot from our Prout 33 and I and had been to the Miami Boat Show for 6 years and had copied the best ideas from various boats). Having seen my plans for the interior, Alex said they would require no adaption and, since we were using so little space, he moved the engines forward from the lazerette, kept the bows empty thus diminishing the normal catamaran hobby horse effect. Work started in December 1998 and she was launched in December 1999. After 11 years and 53,000NM and 48 countries, we find that we would, retrospectively, make no changes.
