Westernman Gaff Cutter. Length on deck 40?6? + running bowsprit. Lwl 37? Beam 12?7? Draft 6?6? A modern yacht on traditional lines, Nigel Irens design, inspired by the famous Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters, the latest of 4 of this design, built by Covey Island Boatworks in 2000. Her traditional design is supported by her modern wood construction to achieve the best of all worlds, proven sea-worthiness, low epoxy maintenance, the look of the traditional yacht and the warm comfort of a wooden interior with a coal cabin stove. The hull design has a long keel with slight rocker sweeping up to the gently raked straight stem. The raked transom stern has an attractive tumble-home with the rudder traditionally hung on the transom. The long keel will allow her to sit comfortably upright when dried out against a wall of even when fitted to take legs The relatively cut-away fore foot will allow her to turn quickly while still giving her directional stability and the ability to sail herself. Her good freeboard, buoyant midships sections and long external ballast keel will make her stand up well to her canvas. A raised rubbing strake all round one plank below deck level and cream painted bulwarks define her very sweet sheer. 12? bulwarks are carried on oak stanchion posts, the bulwark planking shaped in the old way with a radiuused centre-board and a wide capping rail over finished in red paint. The inside face of the bulwarks and the stanchions are finished bright. Bronze stanchions through the capping rail carry twin s/s guard wires another 18? higher for safety, almost invisible and in no way detracting from the appearance of the hull. The bulwark planking is doubled in way of panamas either side of the stem, just aft of midships and on the quarters to take mooring lines thus avoiding often useless fairleads on the rail. On deck she has an aft cock-pit with a coach-roof running forward as far as the mast in the old way. The height of the coach-roof has been kept at almost the same level as the bulwarks. Varnished mahogany sky-light on the coach-roof provides good light and ventilation into the saloon cabin below. The cock-pit is wide and deep with wide seat lockers each side all teak laid and high slightly sloping coamings all of which makes for very comfortable seating, good shelter and a feeling of security. The after corners are nicely rounded, the capping rail is wide enough to sit on without too much pain, the winches can be worked satisfactorily with one knee on the seats. The varnished laminated tiller is cranked up over the after coaming. Long, varnished, panelled mahogany doors with a scrubbed teak step below the seat-level sill enclosing high capacity manual bilge-pump, varnished sliding hatch, varnished mahogany dorade vents each side. Varnished mahogany fore hatch off-set to port on the fore deck. The wide side decks allow easy and comfortable movement fore and aft and the clear, uncluttered fore deck gives plenty of space to work the ship where it is most needed. A varnished oak Sampson post with bronze cap takes the heel of the bowsprit in conjunction with a s/s support bracket. Oak sampson posts each side of the cock-pit also with bronze caps are typical of the Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters. Fife rail around the mast base with bronze pins take the halyard falls as well as a pin rail each side in way of the shrouds. The hull is built in 1 ½? strip plank Douglas fir, epoxy edge-glued. All timber is Premium Grade, kiln dried to below 15% moisture. The faired hull is sheathed in 3 layers of 4oz e-glass glass cloth set in epoxy. The long, external ballast keel is cast in 21,000 lbs of lead secured with 10 off 1? 316 stainless steel bolts to the 10? x 6? Douglas fir back-bone. The edge-glued planking is supported by 2 ¼? x 1 ½? laminated Douglas fir frames at 16? centres. The floors are formed in 4? x
