Horizon 50 2001 Boats Review and Specs
Year: 2001Manufacturer: The Multihull Company
Price: US$419,000
It is perhaps only due to her location that this fine catamaran has not yet been sold, because this Horizon 50, designed by the famous French team of Marc Van Peteghem and William Lauriot Prevost (designers of the Lagoon range of catamarans and a long list of racing catamarans), is truly one of the finest catamarans we have ever had the chance to market and sell. Performance buyers are familiar with the Switch 51, and the Horizon 50 was built during this same period for a buyer who wanted a yacht with a higher level of interior fit and finish and an even ligther and stronger construction – price be damned, because this yacht cost considerably more new than a Switch 51, and I should know, as we were the Switch dealers at this time and also sold the Horizon 50 new. The situation with Pekabo is that she has been lightly used for most of her life in the Med, and has yet to have needed a refit. The owner of the yacht has relocated to Los Angeles and simply does not have the time to look after or oversee any refit issues. Peakabo is probably due for a new set of sails, standing rig is due for replacement, and for those who want her to look “as new” she is due for an awmgrip job and some paint work on aluminmum fittings. She is at a location where all of this can be done quite affordably, but she is honestly ready to sail now if the buyer is not a perfectionist and live with her looking as new. We have priced Peka in consultation with the seller to more than allow for the buyer to spend considerably on her if they wish and still have a great value, or the buyer can simply enjoy her now without worrying a great deal about what are mainly cosmetic things. Her interior woodwork and condition are very, very good – I honestly cannot see doing much in this department. I would rate her interior condition a solid 8 of a 10 for a boat of her vintage. Her exterior condition is about a 6 – her decks could use a repaint and if someone wants her to look totally goregous she could use repainted hulls and beams and such. Her engines have low hours, her gen very low hours, and they are not in need of replacement at all, nor the air con system. What we are talking about mostly here is a little TLC that is largely cosmetic. This is a yacht for a serious performance sailor who also wants the great comfort of truly spacious aft cabins and the fit and finish of a real yacht. Her interior cannot be compared to any of the standard French production boats at all. Her cabinets are many levels above the Ikea-like stuff you typically find in production boats. Right now, with the Euro as it is, Pekabo is to my mind an amazing bargain for anyone who is looking for a top grade, blue-water, high performance cruiser. You simply could not possibly build a yacht of this quality today for anything less than 1.2 million dollars. Pekabo’s story is unique. Back in the late 1990s a top notch pair of French builders came to the United States to build custom catamarans for high-end American buyers. Their aim was to build yachts that were as finely finished as a Stradivarius violin, no matter the cost. To create this yacht, they built a monocoque frame of the hulls and bridge deck and turned it upside down. They then painstakingly stretched cedar strips laden with epoxy and carbon to create the lightest, stiffest yacht they could possibly construct. When the hulls and bridgedeck were complete, the yacht was flipped back over and then finished. Her interior is a work of art, every fitting carefully chosen, every detail considered. I would have to venture to say it took over 30,000 labor hours to construct the Horizon. When finally finished in 2001 she was brought to the Miami Boat Show for exhibition and listed for sale at over $900,000. She was a star at the show, and was immediately purchased. The buyer, however, ran i
