EXY JOHNSON is one of two twin Brigantines built by hand in 2003 using a combination of traditional and modern wooden ship building methods. The twin Brigantines were built in Los Angeles by the Los Angeles Maritime Institute for their Top Sail Youth Program. This beautiful Brigantine is based on the original plans designed in the 1930?s by Henry Gruber but never built. Noted yacht designer W.I.B. ?Bill? Crealock was engaged to adapt the plans to meet modern Coast Guard regulations and to fit the Institutes stringent specifications based on their years of trial and experience. Master shipbuilder Allan Rawl was retained to oversee the project. In May of 1997, a design team of Institute volunteers was established to provide oversight and guidance for the design and construction of the Twin Brigantines. Collectively, the team has a wealth of knowledge and experience, including significant offshore sailing experience. Members of this volunteer group include several Coast Guard Masters License holders, an expert on sailing vessel rigs, a master boat builder, an expert on boat mechanical and electrical systems, and a naval architect/marine engineer.
