CONSTRUCTION: The hull is cold molded of 3 layers of western red cedar covered by a final layer of mahogany. Hull has a thin layer of fiberglass over the mahogany to protect against minor impacts. Hull was recoated with clear Awlgrip at the Hinckley Company in 2008. The teak deck is supported by a marine plywood substructure. The keel is a lead casting with an internal backbone of steel. The rudder is constructed of fiberglass and foam over a hollow stainless steel rudder post. The rudder bearings are housed in a removable cassette that permits easy removal of the whole rudder assemble for trailering. The rudder is controlled by a laminated tiller. JOY is equipped with Harken self tailing sheet and halyard winches. There are stainless steel bow cleats and stern cleats. She has 4 operable bronze port lights with screens. There is an anchor locker forward. The Jib is roller furling and self tending. The mast step is mounted on the cabin top and hinged for easier raising. Deck Joinery: JOY has mahogany toe rails, a mahogany companionway hatch and slats, mahogany cockpit coamings with built in winch handle holders, mahogany cabin sides and mahogany cabin top hand rails ACCOMODATIONS: Coming below in JOY, you step on the teak covered ice chest that provides portable cool storage. To port and starboard are 6’ 4” berths with 4” cushions covered in ultra suede. At the head of the starboard berth is the electrical panel and a reading light. To port is another reading light and the galley. The galley consists of a stainless sink with hand pumped potable water and a one burner Origo alcohol stove with a maple chopping block cover. Moving forward to starboard is the on board stereo and VHF as well as storage lockers and the passage to the forward cabin which contains a v-berth and marine head as well as additional storage. The interior is finished in the Herreshoff style with white cabinetry trimmed in varnished mahogany. The cabin walls show the exposed western red cedar of her hull. ENGINE: JOY has a one cylinder Yanmar 1GM10 diesel engine. The 3’4” stainless steel shaft exits the hull through a packless bearing mounted on a fiberglass stern tube and supported by a strut ahead of the two blade prop. Fuel is stored in a 12 gallon aluminum tank under the port berth. STEERING: varnished tiller ELECTRICAL: JOY has a 12 volt electrical system with a 75 amp hour battery; main circuit fusing; distribution panel with breakers; main switch; shore power hook-up and battery charger. The lighting system includes: Two reading lights Dome lights in galley and forward cabin Bow and stern running lights Masthead light Steaming light ELECTRONICS: Icom VHF, Pioneer stereo, Autohelm Tridata speed and depth SAILS/RIGGING: JOY has a 7/8 sloop rig. The tapered mast is carbon fiber and the boom is aluminum, both are painted white. Lighting on the spar includes a 360 mast head , foredeck light and steaming light. The internal main and jib halyards lead to the deck and aft to a double line clutch and winch on the cabin top. The boom is equiped with two sets of reef points and a bale for the vang. The first reef is a jiffy reef which is lead to the cockpit. The mainsheet is controlled with a traveler at the rear of the cockpit. JOY is equipped with Neil Pryde main sail and jib. The standing rigging is 1X19 stainless.
