The Apprentice 15 is a traditionally constructed double-ended gaff-rigged daysailer that was completed and launched on June 17 by the ApprenticeShop of Rockland Maine. The first of a design by master builder Kevin Carney, the Apprentice 15 is a lapstrake double-ender with a full lead keel. She can easily be transported and launched from a trailer and comfortably carries 4 adults. Her sailing characteristics are similar to a gaff-rigged Herreshoff 12 1/2, but her look is eye-catching and unique. Sails by Nat Wilson. Bronze hardware throughout. The Apprentice 15 is a stable, dry daysailer that comfortably seats 4 adults in an open cockpit. There is a watertight bulkhead forward with access through two lift out hatches. LOA: 15′ Beam: 5′ 8″ Draft: approx. 2′ 4″ Sails (gaff main, with club-footed jib) by Nathaniel S. Wilson of East Boothbay, Maine. Ballast: approx. 700 lbs. lead keel, fastened with bronze keel bolts. Construction: Cedar planks fastened with copper rivets to white oak steam bent frames. The stem and sternpost are live oak, harvested from trees that fell in Hurricane Katrina. The keel timber, deck beams and other structural elements are locust. The cockpit is trimmed in white oak. The spars are solid spruce. All hardware is bronze. The deck is two layers of marine plywood covered in Dynel. The interior is oiled with painted seats and bulkhead. Bronze wood screws and hardware throughout.
