A fin and bulb keel “skimming dish” half rater with lug rig, DIAMOND is the recreation of a Victorian Half Rater – the original; designed and built by Charles Sibbick of Cowes in 1897. Sibbick Raters became World famous; cleverly designed and exquisitely built. Racing in these classes suggested wealth and extravagance to such an extent their design contributed to the abolition of the very rule under which they were built. Built by Martin Nott, Alistair Munro and the students and staff of the Boat Building Academy, Lyme Regis, September 2010 to June 2011, she is a lovely example with fittings to evoke her origins such as a penny from 1897 (the year of the original Diamond) fixed in the mast step and the bulb containing some original lead from the yacht WITCH; she having been built by Sibbick’s own men. The original Diamond was exhibited at the Imperial Institute, Kensington; sold to the Mediterranean, then to Russia.
