REASONABLE OFFERS ACCEPTED ?Helgoland 1? is a historic yawl built in Bremen in 1937 for the navy sailing club Marine Regatta Verein to compete in a 2400 mile transatlantic race between New York and Spain. She won the race and went on in the same season to win an even longer race between Bermuda and the Netherlands. In 1938 she went on to win a race between Germany and Scotland. In 1939 she was the first German sailboat to win the ?Hawke Trophy?, a round trip race between Bremerhaven and Harwich, England that still exists today. She went on to win numerous other events until World War II ensued. During the War, she hosted the highest level naval officers in the German Navy . Surviving WWII, she was transferred to the British and renamed ?Pickle?. In 1949, the Royal Yacht Squadron used her to win ?The Fastnet?, still one of the most important races in the world. Transferred to Canada, she was given needed maintenance and repairs and went on to participate in numerous Transatlantic races in which she won her share of Cups. She won the Newport to Bermuda race five times between 1955 and 1964. Eventually she was acquired by a series of private interests and most recently was restored to Transport of Canada standards, inspected by the Canadian Coast guard, and fitted out as a whale watching vessel at a cost of over $500,000 Canadian. Unfortunately, the use of ?Helgoland 1? as a commercial venture did not prove to be economically viable. She is now in Gaspe, Quebec where she may be inspected. On her most recent sea trials, ?Helgoland 1? achieved a speed under sail in excess of 17 knots! She is ready to sail away with only a few days of preparation.
