A competetive, teak sloop, designed by Robert Clark, built by Crosshaven Boatyard in 1968 for John Macaulay. 40’4.25″ x 30’9″ x 11′ x 7′ 15TM In his letter in the autumn of 1991,John Macaulay told me that he “commissioned Robert Clark to design a boat to compete at the lower end of the Admiral’s Cup rating in RORC Class 11” and for “a boat which would race well for 2 seasons then cruise”. This is precisely what he did and the yacht was only sold on his death in 1993. She was RORC Class 11 Champion in 1968 and did almost as well in her second season. Thereafter she was gently modified for cruising; the engine was repositioned to midships, a hydraulic drive fitted to the shaft and a larger prop fitted to replace the original folding race prop, tankage was increased and she was given a roller headsail. In this guise she cruised the Med, Channel Islands, France and UK as a fast, family yacht. Planked in 1.5″ teak, lead keel, 1993 teak on ply deck, teak coach-roof and cock-pit, Whitlock wheel steering. This is a very robust and durable construction helped by excellent continuous ownership. The keel bolts were replaced in 1991 when the galvanised strap floors were also removed and regalvanised and she hd a new deck in 1993. Masthead sloop rig setting 700sq’ working sail on keel-stepped alloy mast, all rigging replaced between 1998-04 Roller headsail with lazy inner fore-stay. 2 pairs of primary cock-pit winches. 5 other cock-pit winches + 3 mast winches. Excellent sails including 2003 fully battened main and roller genoa by Doyle Sails. Lister Alpha 40hp 4-cyl fresh water cooled diesel installed in 1995. The engine is placed midships with a hydraulic drive on the centre-line prop, new hydraulic motor fitted in 2002. 35 gall s/s tank. 7 berths. 2 fixed berths in the fore peak with an infill to make a double berth. 2 suspended berths above. Port and stbd settee berths in the saloon with a pilot berth above the port settee. 6’+ head-room. All varnished teak joinery. Very fully equipped with Stowe sounder, log, close-haul, auto-pilot. Furuno GPS, Navtex, VHF, 8-man in-date life-raft, life jackets, MoB, dinghy etc etc. A remarkable all TEAK yacht with a distinctive canoe stern which you either love or hate but which allows her to go very fast. She had a Code of Practice certificate up to spring 06 having spent several years doing gentle sail training work – a lovely boat to learn to sail in, fast, stiff, solid yet responsive. A very good buy for anyone contemplating long term ownership of a yacht with proven blue water capability.
